The unfortunate truth is that watering on a fixed schedule (“every Tuesday and Friday”) means you're almost guaranteed to water some plants too early and others too late. Neither extreme kills a plant outright, but both hold it back from ever reaching its full potential.
A handful of factors change how thirsty a plant is from one day to the next:
- Warmer weather = more water needed. Cooler weather = less.
- Low humidity = more water. High humidity = less.
- Bright, intense sun = more water. Shade or overcast days = less.
- Well-rooted, established plants = more water. Newly planted, few roots = less.

Containers and Planters
These hold a limited volume of soil, which is exposed to sun, wind, and heat from every side, not just the top. Also, these pots rely on a lightweight potting soil to drain faster and keep the roots healthy.
Together, that means potted plants, whether it's a container of annual flowers, a hanging basket, or a vegetable planter box, dry out much faster than those same plants would in the ground. Often, they need to be watered daily during a hot summer stretch.
A few more things can make container plants even thirstier:
- Pot Size: Smaller pots dry out faster than large ones.
- Pot Material: Unglazed terracotta dries out faster than plastic or glazed ceramic.
- Root Maturity: Root-bound plants need water more often than those with room left to grow.
Pro Tip: If the soil in a potted plant is extremely dry and pulling away from the sides, the soil has become “hydrophobic.” Any water will run right through the pot and not be absorbed. The best approach is to water slowly and stop, then repeat until the soil becomes spongy again. You could put the pot in a tray of water (called “bottom watering”), but we do not recommend this practice because it's risky and can lead to root rot.
In-Ground Plants

Established plants that are fully integrated into the soil (usually after a year) will send their roots out and down to seek water long after the surface has dried out. That's why in-ground plants generally need less frequent watering than container plants.
The exception is anything recently planted, like a young backyard fruit tree or a bed of drought tolerant perennials. Because their roots have not spread out yet into the surrounding soil, a new in-ground planting needs almost as much watering attention as a container plant.
Bottom line: never assume your patio pots and your garden beds are on the same schedule. They are rarely thirsty at the same time.
The Tricky Part: Overwatering and Underwatering Look the Same

- For garden beds, stick your finger or a small trowel a couple of inches into the soil near the plant's root zone to feel the moisture level. Just know that in heavier soils or fine-particle soils, the surface can dry out before the roots below actually need a drink.

Water until a little liquid runs out from the drainage holes at the bottom. That's what flushes excess fertilizer salts out of the pot instead of letting them build up. A light sprinkle on top of the soil only wets the surface and encourages shallow, weak roots.
