Thinking about starting a California native garden, or finally swapping a thirsty lawn for something the bees will thank you for? Fall is a great time to plant natives in the East Bay, because the cooler months give roots time to settle in before the dry season. On Saturday, October 17, we're making it easier with a full day of native plant shopping and free expert advice.

Free Native Garden Consults with Homegrown Habitats San Leandro

From 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, volunteers from Homegrown Habitats San Leandro will be in the nursery for walk-up, one-on-one conversations. This volunteer-led project, sponsored by the City of San Leandro, helps residents turn yards, patios, and balconies into habitat for pollinators and birds. We've partnered with them on native plant education for three years, and their free consults were a hit at our April Extravaganza.

Ask them about plant selection, garden planning, or creating a front yard California native garden that feeds birds, bees, and butterflies. They know the hyper-local details too, including the monarch butterflies that overwinter in the eucalyptus at Monarch Bay Golf Course.

Tip: bring a few photos of your yard and a note on how much sun it gets. It makes the conversation more useful.

Milkweed Plants for Monarch Butterfly Gardens

We'll have mature [LINK: milkweed product page] California narrowleaf milkweed (Asclepias fascicularis) on hand for your butterfly garden, while supplies last. Pair it with nectar plants from our Attracts Pollinators collection to give monarchs food for every stage.

Shop Native Plants and Support the Bringing Back the Natives Garden Tour

A percentage of every native plant sale made at Evergreen on October 17 goes to the Bringing Back the Natives Garden Tour, the free annual tour of East Bay native gardens each May. We're one of several East Bay nurseries taking part in this year's regional Extravaganza.

Browse our California Natives before you visit, and while you're here, stop by the bulk yard for organic compost and soiland wood chip mulch to get new plantings off to a strong start.
