It’s September already. We can’t believe that the summer has flown by so quickly! As we head into fall, the days are growing shorter and some trees and shrubs are starting to show signs of seasonal changes. Fall is the perfect time to plant, especially in our Mediterranean climate. Fall, winter and spring rains will help to establish plants and allow them to develop deep root systems.

Sago palms, or Cycas revoluta, are wonderful plants to feature in your garden. The Foxtail Agave or Agave attenuata has a delightful rosette-shaped form, which can add an interesting accent to your garden beds. The upward growing leaves are an attractive silvery green. The purple fountain grass, known by the botanical names Pennisetum ‘Rubrum’, is a beautiful and useful grass to add to your landscape. Its foot-long plumes of golden and burgundy seed heads wave in the breeze above the clumping green and maroon foliage. These inflorescences are long lasting and persist through the summer and into the fall. The seed heads are sterile and therefore won’t cause a problem with re-seeding grasses all over your yard!
Verbena is a great selection for Bay Area gardens. Their bloom time is very long – from early spring into late fall. Verbenas are either bedding annuals or perennials that originate from the Americas or Asia.
