Poinsettias are wonderful plants to brighten up your home during the holidays, bringing winter cheer. They start developing their brilliant shades of red, white or pink as the days grow shorter.
Poinsettias belong to the Euphorbia family – one of the largest plant families known for their milky sap that contains latex. This plant originates in Western Mexico.
What look like colorful flowers on these perennials are actually bracts. These are modified leaves whose function is to protect the flower from damage, harsh weather or pests. The true flowers are tiny, inconspicuous, yellow blooms, found clustered together in the center. The bracts on Poinsettias are similar to the colorful ‘flowers’ on Bougainvilleas, which also have much smaller flowers grouped in the center.

Care for poinsettias is easy. They like warmth and indirect light. Keep them out of drafts and mist to counteract any dry air created by heating systems. The root ball should be kept moist – not too dry and not too wet. If over-watered their roots can rot. If you want to re-pot them into a larger container, use a high quality potting soil such as GreenAll’s Organic Potting Soil. They like a slightly acidic soil pH.
