In Your Garden: What to do in March

  • It’s Veggie planting time! Organic vegetable starts and seeds are available for early Spring planting.
  • Provide all the calcium your vegetables and fruits need with E.B. Stone’s Agricultural Lime.
  • Prepare your planting beds for Spring Test the pH of your soil, and for NPK: Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium, those all-important macro-nutrients, amend your soil accordingly.   • Plant your favorite Spring Annuals. Petunias, Begonias, Marigolds, Cosmos and Lobelia are budding and blooming.
  • Stock up on our top quality fertilizers; E.B. Stone Sure Start and E. B. Stone Citrus and Fruit.
  • Shade gardening: We carry a vast array of plants that will provide flowers and foliage for shaded spaces: Impatiens, Ferns, Heucheras, and more…
  • Rhododendrons and Azaleas are budding and blooming. Now is the best time to choose new plants.
  • Spring is the best time to re-pot houseplants and give them their first feeding.
  • Use E.B. Stone Sure Start fertilizer with new plantings for quick establishment.
  • Prune freeze damaged plants now (if you haven’t already). But, wait to prune Spring blooming shrubs, until after flowering.
  • Slugs and snails are hatching in your garden right now, protect your plants with Sluggo.
  • Apply mulch: GreenAll Microbark Mulch will reduce moisture loss as well as keep roots cool in-ground and containers. Use mulches on established and new plantings.
  • Aphids are beginning to appear. Stop them early with Tip Top LadybugsBonide Neem Oil or Monterey Take Down. The best time to spray is at the end of the day after the bees have stopped foraging. Use on roses and all your plants!
  • Use Monterey Complete Disease Control, a bacteria-based fungicide to prevent and cure Spring rust and mildew. (OMRI listed)
  • Check your irrigation system for any leaks and breaks before the season starts.
