Drought Tolerant Pick: Ceanothus Yankee Point
Commonly known as California Lilac, Ceanothus is a tough evergreen shrub that handles all the extremes of California’s climate. These thrive in full sun, sandy loam soil, and tolerate wind. They are impressive all year for their dense and resilient deep green foliage. Prolific blooms cover the plant from late April through June. Blue flower clusters are a favorite food for native bees and other pollinators. Prune off the flowers immediately after blooming to maintain a tight branching habit.
‘Yankee Point’ is an excellent plant to stabilize a slope or accent a large retaining wall. Growing only 2-3 feet tall, but 8-10 wide, it will break up any harsh hardscape.
Hardy in USDA Zones 8-10.
